Senior Pathologist EPL, Inc. Raleigh, North Carolina, United States
Both a worldwide pandemic and the development of deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) applications greatly advanced the adoption of digital pathology in toxicologic pathology. This talk will briefly describe the use of digitized slides (whole slide images) in toxicologic pathology and address the technological and regulatory challenges of fully adopting this technology. In addition, applications of AI in toxicologic pathology will be discussed, including examples of current initiatives such as enhancing the diagnostic accuracy of the pathologist, screening out slides with no lesions (separating normal from abnormal), and objectively quantifying lesions. Finally, the pros and cons of using AI-based language tools to assist the pathologist in report writing will be presented.
